Are you passionate about helping people be active and have fun? The Urbandale Senior Recreation Center is a hub of activity for adults 55 and over. As a Recreation Specialist you will help plan and implement social, recreational, and educational programs. The Recreation Specialist provides general customer service and front desk duties at the USRC. You’ll spend most of your time interacting with the public as the first person they meet when they enter the facility. If you are organized, self-motivated, and enjoy working with people, we want to hear from you. Standard hours for this position will fall between 7 am and 5 pm, 40 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend events throughout the year.

Routine Job Duties/Responsibilities

Under general supervision, assists the Recreation Superintendent, Senior Center Supervisor, and Recreation Coordinators with scheduling, monitoring, and providing administrative support for various recreational opportunities offered within the city-wide general recreational programs as well as those that are specific to the Senior Recreation Center or Parks and Recreation department.

  • Performs day-to-day customer service operations including answering phones, interacting with patrons/program participants, handling registrations and collecting deposit fees; addresses and resolves minor customer service issues or forwards to other staff members as appropriate.
  • Organizes and tracks account expenditures, processes bills and registration receipts.
  • Assists with facility and room reservations/usage for programming purposes/rentals.
  • Assists in printing or posting marketing materials for recreation offerings via department’s website, social media, and email lists; provides input for flyers, posters, etc.
  • Research new recreation programs or wellness/health/education offerings that may be of interest to specific groups and collaborates with other departmental staff when future programs/classes are being set up for the seasonal program guide.
  • Assists with the monitoring of recreation offerings/programs performance and generates attendance and other types of reports upon request; alerts supervisors if instructors need assistance or do not show up for agreed upon times/dates of programs.
  • Enters data into a computer from a variety of sources including accounting, payroll, standard statistical, activity and related documents; inputs corrections and updates; verifies data for accuracy and complete­ness; conducts inquires; compiles information for reporting.
  • Performs instructional or program leadership roles.
  • Assists with league/program schedules, inventory tally and ordering, and tracks equipment check out and return.
Periodic Job Duties/Responsibilities
  • Assists with set up for special events.
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. 


Typical Qualifications


Must be able to pass a pre-employment offer: reference checks, drug screen, motor vehicle report and background check.

Education/Experience 
  • Associate degree in Leisure Services, Recreation, Education, Sports Management, or related degree. 
  • Six (6) months of related work experience in recreation programming. Work experience as part of an academic credit student internship, or paid recreation internship, will be counted toward the required work experience. Additional work experience beyond the minimum required may be exchanged for the required education at the rate of one year of additional experience for one year of the required education.
License/Certification
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certificates within first two months of employment and maintained thereafter.
  • Valid Iowa driver’s license.
Skills
  • Ability to work primarily weekday hours and additional hours (including evenings) as necessary for programming needs.
  • Ability to keep accurate records.

  • Knowledge of recreation programming and facility operations.
  • General knowledge of office equipment, including but not limited to, facsimile, photo copier, telephone, calculator, etc.
  • Proficiency with personal computers including, but not limited to, word processing, spread sheets and department related software.


Supplemental Information

The Civil Service testing process for this job posting will consist of a written questionnaire and an oral board interview.

The salary range listed includes pay steps based on length of service therefore most employees start at the minimum of the advertised range.
