The City of Ankeny is seeking applicants for the full-time position of Park Maintenance Technician II within the Parks and Recreation Department. The ideal candidate will have a degree in Horticulture or related field, five years' experience in performing grounds maintenance, an Iowa pesticide applicator certification, and certification for prescribed burns s130 &s190.
Starting salary range is $33.54 - $36.98 per hour depending on experience, plus overtime and excellent benefits. Monday-Friday; 7:00 am - 3:30 pm; some weekend work. Must have a good driving record with no OWI in the last 5years.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains parks, aquatic centers, green spaces, public bodies of water, city office facilities, playfields, community centers, right-of-ways and parking areas including debris removal, detention basins, and recreational trails.
- Develops, maintains and improves flower gardens, trees, shrubs and prairie areas in all city parks, municipal buildings, aquatic centers and open space areas.
- Participates in maintenance work such as pruning trees and brush, prescribed burns, mowing, snow plowing, ice control, chemical application, minor electrical and plumbing.
- Performs manual labor as required including digging, painting, picking up litter, carpentry, facility cleaning and repair.
- Maintains, fabricates, repairs, and replaces park and facility amenities.
- Loads and unloads heavy objects and materials used in division activities.
- Loads and hauls rock, dirt, and other materials.
- Performs routine maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment and makes necessary adjustments to ensure proper working order.
- Assists in division building maintenance to keep building and grounds clean and neat.
- Cleans tools and equipment after use and stores in appropriate locations.
- Provides human resources and support in city emergencies.
- Occasionally attends approved division related seminars and workshops to improve technical knowledge and abilities and evaluate new techniques.
- May be required to assist as directed with other divisions or other city department’s activities.
- Performs routine maintenance and new installations of plumbing, electrical, and irrigation components and systems.
- Must maintain required certifications.
Entry Requirements and Skills
Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under adverse weather conditions.
Must have five years’ experience in performing grounds maintenance and the operation of light, medium, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment.
Ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License Class B with airbrakes endorsement.
Shall possess an Iowa pesticide applicator certification.
Must have two or more of the following certifications: backflow tester, prescribed burns s130 & s190, maintenance plumber, maintenance electrician, certified pool operator, playground safety inspector, building maintenance, certified arborist, nuisance wildlife control operator, aquatic pest control, possess an associate degree in commercial horticulture, forestry, landscaping or related field, or have five years’ experience in managing people.
