CITY OF DEWITT – JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Fitness Center and Recreation Coordinator
DEPARTMENT: Parks & Recreation
REPORTS TO: Parks & Recreation Director
FLSA STATUS: Exempt
STATUS: Full-Time
TYPICAL HOURS: 8 AM-5 PM
HOURS: Primarily weekdays, with some evenings, weekends, and special events as required
Position Purpose
Under the direct supervision of the Parks & Recreation Director, this position is responsible for serving as the office manager of the DeWitt Fitness Center, supervising Fitness Center staff, assisting with coordinating parks & recreation programs, facilities and special events. This position plays a key role in ensuring excellent customer service as well as creating positive community recreation experiences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Fitness Center & Administrative Duties
- Supervise daily operations of the DeWitt Fitness Center, including front desk staff.
- Assist in selecting, training, and evaluating Fitness Center desk staff.
- Assist in the development of the Fitness Center operating budget.
- Prepare work schedules for front desk personnel and oversee daily deposits.
- Complete payroll, billing, membership contracts, and monthly financial reports.
- Assist with the enrolment of new members, annual locker rentals, and collection accounts.
- Order office supplies and maintain accurate records.
- Execute routine manual and electronic pool checks and have a basic understanding of pool and spa operations.
Program & Event Development
- Assist with the development, coordination, and evaluation of recreation programs for all ages.
- Assist with creating innovative and engaging new programs to enhance community offerings.
- Assist with planning, promotion, and execution of department programs and special events.
Community Engagement & Customer Service
- Provide excellent customer service to residents, patrons, and staff.
- Communicate effectively and transparently with the public, staff, and community partners.
- Promote programs through social media and other marketing channels.
Administrative & Financial Support
- Assist in budget and resource management, including identifying sponsorships, partnerships, and other resource opportunities.
- Utilize recreation management software (experience with Rec Desk is a plus).
Team & Department Collaboration
- Work closely with the Parks & Recreation Director and Recreation Supervisor to achieve departmental goals.
- Participate in department-wide initiatives, programs, and events.
- Assist with staff training and development.
- Exhibit enthusiasm for all department operations and willingness to be flexible with assignments.
Other Duties
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Parks & Recreation.
Job Environment
Primarily inside office work performed under controlled conditions, but with occasional humidity, poor ventilation and noise. Interacts with City Departments, and general public. Has access to sensitive and confidential information. Operates computer, calculator, copier, telephone and other standard office equipment. Occasionally outdoor work is required, including walking on uneven grass surfaces and subjection to different weather conditions for brief periods of time.

Occasional climbing, stooping, kneeling, and reaching activities. Requires ability to converse, using verbal and listening skills, with citizen customers and staff. Requires clarity of vision 20" or less, and 20' or more as well as eye/hand coordination, manual/finger dexterity and motor coordination. Requires the ability to operate keyboard or calculator at efficient speed. Requires clerical, forms, numerical, and verbal perception. Minimal physical strength requirements involving the moving, lifting, pushing, carrying and pulling of objects weighing up to 25 pounds. Minimal stamina and balance required to walk on uneven grass surfaces. In the absence of Director may be required to respond to emergencies at DeWitt Fitness Center.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Education, Training & Experience:
- Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; post-secondary coursework in recreation or related field preferred. Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Computer literacy and strong oral and written communication skills.
- Must hold a valid driver’s license.
- CPR and First Aid certification or ability to obtain.
- Experience working with the public and responding to customer service requests or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Prior experience in municipal or community recreation is preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY, & SKILL
Knowledge:
Knowledge of modern office procedures and administration. Knowledge of fitness, recreation, and aquatics programming. Knowledge of best practices of leisure services and leisure programming. Knowledge of modern management in municipal government.
Ability:
Ability to effectively supervise employees and delegate responsibilities. Ability to organize and collaborate with others, communicate effectively, and establish and maintain working relationships with City employees, residents, participants, and customers. Ability to operate modern phone system and operate modern personal computer, ability to prioritize and multitask with many interruptions and time constraints. Ability to work independently as well as on a team. Ability to prioritize tasks, complete work assignments accurately, on time, and within budgetary limits. Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with staff, other City department personnel, volunteer groups, and the general public.
Skill:
Excellent customer service and organization skills, effective writing and oral communication skills. Skill in operating personal computer with Microsoft Office applications, social media platforms, and other recreation management software. Skill in leading groups of employees and volunteers. Exceptional customer service skills, including working with all age groups.
