Athletic Facilities Superintendent

This is specialized and technical work in the maintenance operations of the municipal athletic fields, complexes, Musco Sports Center, and the municipal golf course.  This position performs supervisory and administrative work in oversight of these facilities. Work involves initiation, direction and performance of specialized and technical tasks relating to the maintenance and care of turf grass areas, ball diamond surfaces, irrigation system management, parking lot and landscape maintenance, operating equipment, buildings and associated components. The position also provides maintenance oversight to the air supported dome. 

Starting salary is $76,544 with excellent benefits.

A two year degree in horticulture with an emphasis in turf management and/or athletic field maintenance; Bachelor’s degree preferred. Minimum of two years responsible experience in athletic field and golf course maintenance and repair; or any equivalent combination of related technical experience, education, or training which would provide the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

Advanced knowledge of agronomy and turfgrass management practices; a working knowledge of golf facility construction principles, practices and methods, and a thorough understanding of the rules and regulations of the game of golf.

Knowledge of current federal, state and local laws and regulations affecting golf course operations (including, but not limited to, employment, safety and environmental standards, laws and regulations).

Considerable technical knowledge of the specialized methods, equipment, and materials used in the maintenance and preparation of athletic fields, sports turf grass, golf courses, landscape areas and other recreational facilities.

Knowledge of proper care and maintenance practices for air supported dome structures and artificial turf.

Possession of a current State of Iowa Pesticide Applicator’s License within the first six (6) months of employment in this classification and continued maintenance throughout employment. Required endorsements include 3OT, 5, and 6.

Possession of a valid Driver’s and continued maintenance of the license throughout period of employment and must be insurable by the City’s insurance company.

Residency within 30 air miles of Muscatine City limits required within 6 months.
